The Balmoral

March 29, 2010

Thanks to the road-works that seem to have been present along Princes Street for the last 18 months continually, many of the traffic light are supported in concrete blocks, rather than the ground.  These blocks make great rests for a camera, although they are a little low.  I like this shot, but I think I could do much better with a tripod and a little more time.  I planned to go back the next night, but it has rained pretty much ever since and now the clocks have changed so it makes it less likely.  Nevertheless, expect another version of this photo at some point.

Scottish Parliament (detail)

March 23, 2010

This patern is repeated right round the Parliament building in different materials; wood, steel, and concrete.  Where it’s done in concrete, each slab has the lights in a different place.  That means that they aren’t just slabs made in special moulds but that each individual slab is made in a unique, slightly different, mould from the rest.  Why?
